Android Pie Still Absent from Android Distribution Chart, Nougat Retains Leadership But With Slight Dip

Google  has released the revised statistics for Android distribution, with the data still not showing the latest and the greatest version,  Android 9.0 Pie . This is, notably,  not the first time Android Pie isn't a part of the Android distribution dashboard. The previous two revisions also  showed the insignificant share  of the Android version that was  released  last month and available across all Pixel smartphones and Essential Phone since launch. Companies such as  HMD Global  and  OnePlus  recently announced the rollout of Android Pie for their key models. Of course, Android Pie market share should expand over time as more devices adopt the new operating system. The fresh distribution numbers by Google  show  that Android Pie is yet to open an account due to having less than 0.1 percent of distribution so far. Models such as  OnePlus 6  and  Nokia 7 Plus  lately started receiving the latest up...

US Judge Rules Against Qualcomm's Appeal to Ban iPhone Imports in US

A US trade judge on Friday declined to block the importation of  Apple iPhones with chips from  Intel Corp , handing a major defeat to  Qualcomm  Inc in its high-stakes legal dispute with the iPhone maker. A US International Trade Commission judge said Apple's phones infringed one Qualcomm patent related to power management technology, but denied the chipmaker's request for a ban on the import of some iPhones into the United States. Thomas Pender, an administrative law judge at the ITC, said that "public interest factors" weighed against granting  Qualcomm's request for a ban . The determination will be reviewed by other judges. Qualcomm, the world’s largest mobile phone chipmaker, has another pending patent case against Apple before the ITC. Apple said in a statement that Qualcomm had unfairly demanded royalties for technologies it had nothing to do with. We’re glad the ITC stopped Qualcomm’s attempt to damage competition and ultimately ha...

Google May Pay Apple $9 Billion to Remain Default Search Engine on iPhones

Google is reportedly paying  Apple  a whopping $9 billion (about Rs. 65,000 crores) in 2018 to remain the default search engine for iPhone's Safari browser on iOS, the media reported. Citing Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall, a Business Insider  report  claimed this number could go up to $12 billion (about Rs. 87,000 crores) in 2019. In the investor note, Hall reportedly wrote, "We believe this revenue is charged ratably based on the number of searches that users on Apple's platform originate from Siri or within the Safari browser." While Apple uses Google as the default search engine in Safari on iOS devices such as iPhones and iPads, the company also uses Bing in ...

Facebook Said to Have Won Legal Battle in US Against Wiretapping of Messenger Calls

US investigators failed in a recent courtroom effort to force Facebook to wiretap voice calls over its  Messenger app in a closely watched test case, according to two people briefed on the sealed ruling. Members of a joint federal and state task force probing the international criminal gang MS-13 had tried in August to hold  Facebook  in contempt of court for failing to carry out a wiretap order, Reuters reported last month. Arguments were heard in a sealed proceeding in a US District Court in Fresno, California weeks before 16 suspected gang members were indicted there, but the judge ruled in Facebook's favour, the sources said. The details of his reasoning were not available. The government's request had alarmed technology executives and privacy advocates. Officials in the United States and other Western countries are stepping up attempts to ban or limit strong encryption and expand their wiretapping capabilities. An affidavit by an FBI agent filed publicly ...

Other "Internet stakeholders" will be invited to the same roundtable with Trump, the White House said, with other details, including the date, still to come. Google didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Facebook Says Up to 50 Million Accounts Breached by Hackers

Facebook revealed on Friday that up to 50 million accounts were breached by hackers, dealing a blow to the social network's effort to convince users to trust it with their data. The social network is investigating the extent of harm done when hackers exploited a trio of software flaws to steal "access tokens," the equivalent of digital keys that enable people to automatically log back into the social network. Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said engineers discovered the breach on Tuesday, and patched it on Thursday night. "We don't know if any accounts were actually misused," Zuckerberg said. "This is a serious issue." As a precaution, Facebook is temporarily taking down the "view as" feature -- described as a privacy tool to let users see how their profiles look to other people. "It's clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook's code," said vice president of product management Guy Ro...

Department of Telecom to Talk to UIDAI, Telcos on Compliance With Aadhaar Verdict

The  Department of Telecommunications (DoT)  would talk to  Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)  and telecom operators to make sure telecom regulations and service providers are in compliance with the Supreme Court verdict on Aadhaar, said DoT Secretary  Aruna Sundararajan  on Thursday. In its ruling, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said telecom subscribers do not need to link their mobile numbers with  Aadhaar . Though the Supreme Court bench upheld the constitutional validity of Aadhaar, struck down Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act, disallowing private entities from possessing Aadhaar numbers of individuals. The judgement, thus, bars telecom companies and online wallet services from seeking the unique identity number of consumers. "We will be sitting in the coming days with the Aadhaar authorities and the TSPs (telecom service providers) to make sure we are in complete compliance with the Supreme Court order," Sundararajan said. The ...
